Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, France, at the mouth of the Loire, is the heir to the Penhoët yard that built the great French liners Normandie and Île de France. Formed under its present name in 1955, it built France in 1961, then the world's longest passenger ship, before turning to tankers and, from the 1980s, cruise ships. Its defining modern landmark is Cunard's Queen Mary 2 of 2003, the only true ocean liner among the 48 Phase 1 ships here. Saint-Nazaire also built the French Oasis-class ships Harmony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas, Celebrity's Millennium and Edge classes, the R-class ships now sailing for Azamara and Oceania, and much of the MSC fleet, from the Lirica class to MSC World Europa — a yard as central to French shipbuilding as to cruising.
