Fincantieri of Italy is the world's largest cruise-ship builder by volume, and the 122 Phase 1 ships listed here — more than any other yard in this directory — show why. Formed in 1959 as a state holding for historic Italian yards and an operating company from 1984, the group builds cruise ships mainly at Monfalcone, Marghera near Venice, Sestri Ponente at Genoa and Ancona. Monfalcone delivered Carnival Destiny in 1996, the first cruise ship over 100,000 gross tons, and the yard network has since supplied whole classes in series: Carnival's Conquest and Dream classes, Princess Cruises' Royal class, Holland America's Vista and Pinnacle ships, Cunard's Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, Virgin Voyages' Lady class from Sestri Ponente, and Viking's near-identical ocean fleet from Ancona. Building for almost every major group at once is Fincantieri's defining role.
